WebJan 8, 2024 · Yes and no. I use external hard drives all the time. Generally speaking you don't HAVE to leave them plugged in but it's easier if you do. For example, if you unplug the drive with steam running, it will likely get a bit confused temportarily as it will no longer see those games as installed (obviously).
